June 24th-28th

The Raccoon Arts Collective presents Olympia's first annual Summer Squash! From Wednesday June 24th through Sunday June 28th, the community will join in a celebration of all that we have to offer. Integrating performance and participation we hope to deconstruct the barrier between life and art. Working and playing together we form a stronger and more meaningful community. For five days, in formal venues, as well as houses and gardens, Olympia will actualize this greater vision of itself. Summer Squash incorporates visual art, performance, music, athletics, gardening, teaching and learning into a single event. We hope to achieve a breadth and scope that will engage all members of the Olympia area. Our days will be filled with murals, sports and workshops; our nights with theater, dance and music, everyday unique and inspiring. This is an event for the people, by the people, of the people. Our goal is to support community members in seeing their visions become reality. Motivating each other we can achieve more than we would alone. What will you do to be a part of the fun? Hey friends, On Sat Jan 31st is presenting our 2 year Anniversary Westside Artswalk complete with food, eclectic music, installation, visual arts, and lots of dancing with your friends. Things have been shaping up really nicely. So far we have some excellent events including:

Hey our friends in the Beehive Design Collective will be doing a workshop up at Evergreen this Friday 7pm Seminar building II room A1105. The beehive collective based in Maine works on alternatives to corporate imperialism and globalization through art, design, cross border outreach and education. We love the bees and we're excited to see they're new poster which has been years in the making. These folks are truly stout!!!

paRteeeeee! Like it's thursday! We are having a summer solstice benefit party at the Nut House (2220 Walnut rd.) on Thurs. June 21st. It is going to be a benefit for the future space as well as the Olympia Family Barter Faire. There will be music all day, dance, drink, a cafe, butoh, games, a kids corner, a silent art auction, as well as a bunch of other fun stuff. We will start partying at noon and go until really late. Volunteers to come and help out with various things throughout the day, as well as folks that just want to lay on blankets and enjoy the sun, are all welcome. Please come, and bring your friends and families.

KNOW HOPE is an artists from Tel-Aviv who creates handmade drawings out of paper and then lites them up with candles.

The artists tells us:

"What i like about the lanterns is that it deals with the frail temporary aspect of putting up art in street.if i take the best case scenario (that nobody takes the piece after a short while and there are no extreme winds or rain) then the longest life span of these pieces will be that of the candles, which is probably just a few hours. therefore, when someone runs into it on the street they know that it was placed there not so long ago and they, by coincidence, got there in the small time frame that the piece was "active", hopefully giving them the feeling that it was placed there especially for them, and maybe guiding them,following them home and subtly lighting up their way."

The Cult of Youth Reader is Seattle's premiere youth-themed book-arts-affectionate party-in-a-magazine, featuring original art and writing by a whole bunch of really terrific emerging talent. The Raccoon Collective has been working extra hard as of late and for some time now has been in negotiations with the owner of the former Capital City Studios building (911 4th Ave). Currently we are working out a work trade agreement too remodel the space. Once the initial remodeling is complete we hope to open most of the space including the venue by June 28th.

This space is ideal for:

Performance arts (theater, music, poetry readings ect)
Recording
Film showings
Dance parties
Studios
Offices for Community organizations
A cooperative cafe?
and more...

So far we have talked of collaborating with the Procession of the Species, The YODA Project, What U GOT fest, Bicycle Records, Olympia Family Theater and are looking for the participation of other groups in town as well.....We are also in need of experienced carpenters who would love to help the community arts and be hired by us to lead a work crew as well as multiple vulunteers for such a crew.

(816 Adams by the Library) the day after the Procession of the Species Parade Eco City Olympia in parternership with the raccoon ARTS collective will be hosting a work party (with emphasis on Party!) centered around Permaculture Activism, Ecocity development, and the formation of a new City Repair Crew here in Oly. Expect to get your hands dirty doing a little permaculture landscaping on site. There will be coordination meeting for those who are interested in attending the upcoming Village Building Convergence (7) May 18-27 in Portland OR. Our friend freeplay from the Raccon Collective busted out this wheatpaste/stencil/installation in downtown Portland right next to the entrance to Chinatown (4th ave and Burnside) check it out if it's still up it's part of an urban patch seires he's working on. So friday night at the Eagles Hall (4th and plum) at I think around 9:30pm

there will be a great show featuring DJ Rupture and Filastine as well as a

twelve piece balkan style marching band with members of Infernal noise

brigade the raccoon collective may be tabling there so stop on by and say

YO. We may have some free stickers for ya and if you haven't paid your dues

(5$) and got a button yet well it would be a great time to do that too.

Hope to see you there or on Sunday 3-5pm @ Media Is. Today a couple of us

toured a space on 4th ave. that quite suitable for a artist resource center/

gallery/ venue and I'll I can say about it right now is that it's very

exciting---more news to come soon.

If any of you folks like street art please send photos of things you've seen

Guerilla Poetry PROJECT (idea submission)

A special someone contacted me about a idea called the Guerilla Poetry Project which would involve pasting up large format poems that either you a a close friend wrote in a graphic or typographic way or coupled with imagery. The poetry would be placed all over PDX, OLY, and SEA and on the day that the project is finished flyers with maps as well as digital maps will appear announcing the locations and in fact turning entire municipalities into one giant art/lit show! If you would like to be involved the only way to do so is email raccooncollective@gmail.com with the subject GPP any news about this project will only be posted on this blog. The project will commence once enough interest has generated so be quick. Beware:we never hibernate

What up you little rascals, On Sunday March 11th from 3-5pm @ Media Island (316 Adams St, SE) there will be a planning meeting for this months Westside Artwalk 3 (March 31st) (yes I did made a mistake with a earlier post) as well as next months Eastside Artwalk/Procession of the species after party? (April 28th). If we're lucky we might even get to some other development stuff too. Come get involved and then stick around to cook, eat, or clean with Food Not Bombs who will also be catering a benefit/speaking event on St. Patties Day for Camp Quixote (nettle soup anyone) . If you live on the east or west side and would like your house to be a venue or are a artist. crafter, filmmaker, musician, ect then come to this meetup or email us raccooncollective@gmail.com to participate.

Ok so tonight there is a gala event @ TESC from 6-9Pm which includes RIOT FOLK collective, the hail seizures and the EMergen C. The raccoon collective will be tabling and doing distro work for the Hail Seizures (check out the new Hail seizures/Pasties split) and the Beehive Design Collective. Bring a non perishable food item if possible and stop by our table and get involved. We now have a flickr and blog account where you can upload photos (especially of innovative street art) and post news and ideas . Besides meetings the blog will be a main source of communication and networking for the collective. You can access both the blog and flickr account with the username -- raccooncollective and password--- bearear--- Well that all four now our next meeting is SUN 4pm Traditions. ART NOT ARMS!
