Pan-OLYmpia Summer Squash Festival

The Raccoon Collective Presents:
Olympia Summer Squash Festival 2009
June 24th-28th

The Raccoon Arts Collective presents Olympia's first annual Summer Squash! From Wednesday June 24th through Sunday June 28th, the community will join in a celebration of all that we have to offer. Integrating performance and participation we hope to deconstruct the barrier between life and art. Working and playing together we form a stronger and more meaningful community. For five days, in formal venues, as well as houses and gardens, Olympia will actualize this greater vision of itself. Summer Squash incorporates visual art, performance, music, athletics, gardening, teaching and learning into a single event. We hope to achieve a breadth and scope that will engage all members of the Olympia area. Our days will be filled with murals, sports and workshops; our nights with theater, dance and music, everyday unique and inspiring. This is an event for the people, by the people, of the people. Our goal is to support community members in seeing their visions become reality. Motivating each other we can achieve more than we would alone. What will you do to be a part of the fun? For more information contact: olysummersquash@gmail.com Weekly organizational meetings open to all: Wednesdays 7pm @ Media Island 816 Adams SE Mission Statement: Support community based culture by establishing venues for individuals and groups to celebrate with the greater population. Integrating performance and participation in these venues deconstructs the barrier between life and art.

New Valerie Park Distro

The Bad news:

We've had to cancel one too many artswalks lately because of general over commitment to basic survival
The Good news:  We will do artswalk at the end of January which will be our official two year anniversary.  Think Party.  Big Party
We're also pround to annouce our partnership with local upcoming Ms. Valerie Park Distro
New Distro! by raccoon collective.
This is a new (small-ish, humble-ish) Olympia-based distro. It's CD's, zines, tapes, vinyl, and handmade things from local (mostly Oly, Seattle, Portland) folk. Check it: www.msvaleriepark.blogspot.com/ Everything's real cheap and more stuff is getting added all the time, so keep comin' back! Thanks to all who can support it and make it work for the artists involved.  Look for work by Raccoon collective member artist. Words.

Calling all writers, artist, and dreamers

OPEN CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS The Cult of Youth Editorial Board extends an open call to submit art, writing, or music to the Cult of Youth's upcoming Seattle issue, COY#4. The Cult of Youth Reader is Seattle's premiere youth-themed book-arts-affectionate party-in-a-magazine, featuring original art and writing by a whole bunch of really terrific emerging talent. In this issue we'll be exploring Seattle's (youth) culture or lack thereof, past and present, from inception to self-destruction, as well as more general portraits of neighborhoods, favorite spots, and Seattle memories. Any works related to this theme will be considered for publication. Sample topics: * Your favorite place in Seattle * Essay about your neighborhood, what makes it unique * Stories from Seattle ("it could only happen here") * About moving here: why/how/when/etc. * Compare to where you came from * Growing up in Seattle * Secrets about Seattle: hideouts, good spots for dumpster diving, your favorite graffiti, great all-night diners nobody goes to, the magic spell that makes it so a bus comes as soon as you light a cigarette * Memories, events in Seattle * The "Seattle personality": passive aggressive, two-faced, tight pants, hiking boots * Death/destruction of Pike/Pine * Seattle as Babylon: earthquakes and other disasters * Attempts to define Seattle culture * Interviews with Seattle notables * The history of Seattle, like the actual history with Lewis and Clark and stuff * Seattle's unique music culture, how everybody is in a band * Grunge and why we love and hate it * Movies about Seattle from the early/mid 90's when Seattle was trendy: Singles, Sleepless in Seattle * Coffee * Why Seattle is/is not dying Writing makes our publication, so we want to hear from all kinds of writers - even if you haven't been published before. Also, we are looking for people who like to do interviews for this issue (contact lit editor: Aaron). We're also looking for artists of any media to illustrate specific articles--We'll send you the article, you'll send us an illustration or photo based on it within a week or two--so if you'd be interested in that, please reply with some general examples of your work post haste (contact art editor: Julia).

You ask for it......A NEW Community ARTS and Venue Space is coming!!!

Beware we never hibernate! yep thats right!

The Raccoon Collective has been working extra hard as of late and for some time now has been in negotiations with the owner of the former Capital City Studios building (911 4th Ave). Currently we are working out a work trade agreement too remodel the space. Once the initial remodeling is complete we hope to open most of the space including the venue by June 28th.

This space is ideal for:

  • Performance arts (theater, music, poetry readings ect)
  • Recording
  • Film showings
  • Dance parties
  • Studios
  • Offices for Community organizations
  • A cooperative cafe?
  • and more...
So far we have talked of collaborating with the Procession of the Species, The YODA Project, What U GOT fest, Bicycle Records, Olympia Family Theater and are looking for the participation of other groups in town as well.....We are also in need of experienced carpenters who would love to help the community arts and be hired by us to lead a work crew as well as multiple vulunteers for such a crew.
